Avon Foundation

For 14 years the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade provided funding to support a breast cancer prevention and control initiative implemented among low income, medically underserved women in El Paso, Texas. Program components included early detection via promotora-community outreach, patient navigation and case management to address lack of cancer education, screening guidelines, and screening barriers to reduce cancer disparities through the implementation of various forms of patient advocacy and referral. In addition, this breast health prevention program successfully used a mass media communication TV show called “A Time to Know for your Health” hosted by CCDC staff. To prove the effectiveness of the intervention, participant data was gathered through a validated survey instrument developed by the Avon Crusade.

Outcome: A total of 8,400 women were screened, educated, and navigated between 2004 and 2018.
